Prunella (Prunella Grandiflora Alba) - Here is yet another brilliant color for the flower garden that can be grown from Prunella seeds! White Prunella ground cover plants are smothered in white blooms forming on compact spikes that rise above the thick green foliage. Prunella begins blooming in June and continues all the way through September. They make an excellent ground cover or border plant. A common name for Prunella is Self Heal. As the name indicates, the Self Heal plant has medicinal properties.
Prunella ground cover will thrive in many types of soil. Prunella plants will grow in either full or part sun, and it attracts butterflies and beneficial insects. White Prunella Self Heal has dazzling flowers. The foliage only gets to about 4 inches tall, but the flowers will bloom upward another 6 - 8 inches. Space Prunella ground cover plants about 10 - 12 inches apart.
Sow Prunella ground cover seed in late winter, indoors. Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Lightly cover the Prunella seeds with a fine sprinkling of peat moss. Place in a warm place, and keep at a temperature of between 65 - 70F. After sowing keep the surface of the compost moist but not soggy. When large enough to handle, transplant the Prunella seedlings into 3 inch pots. Gradually harden the seedlings to outdoor conditions for 10 - 15 days before planting out after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 12 inches apart or plant in containers. Prunella care includes trimming off old flower spikes for a neater appearance and to promote further blooming.
