Sweet Peas Seeds, carefree vining cover for fences and walls
Lathyrus latifolius 'Pearl Red'
Everlasting Sweet Pea, Perennial Sweet Pea, Lathyrus latifolius 'Albus'
Hardy Perennial
Sweet Pea (Lathyrus Latifolius Pearl Red) - Many people consider Everlasting Pea Vine to be an old-fashioned gardening favorite since they make a carefree vining cover for fences and walls and easily establish from Sweet Peas seeds. The large red blooms of this perennial Sweet Pea are about 1 1/2 inches across. If not supported, red Sweet Pea flowers will cover the ground. Despite its lack of scent, the Everlasting Pea plant is still one of the finest cut flowers and is always a colorful addition to the garden.
For best germination, Sweet Pea flower seeds need to be scarified before sowing. Nicking the seed with a nail clipper breaks the outer coat of the flower seed so it can absorb water immediately. By doing this a larger percentage of the seeds will germinate and they will sprout a few days earlier. After nicking the seed, soak the perennial Sweet Pea seeds over night in tepid water.
Sow Sweet Pea flower seeds directly outdoors after frost season has passed. Prepare a seed bed by loosening the top 1 - 2 inches of soil and weeding. Sow Sweet Peas seeds 2 - 3 inches apart, and thin plants later to desired spacing. Have a trellis or wire for Everlasting Pea plants to attach to as they will begin to climb very quickly after germination.
