Yellow, white, and red/purple onions grow very well in THE home gardens. Green onions may be eaten fresh or chopped and added to salads. Bulb onions may be sliced and used on sandwiches or dipped in batter and fried as onion rings. Although onions are a source of vitamins A and C, they are used mostly as a flavoring in other food dishes.

Onions are one of the most popular vegetables in the home garden. They are easy to grow and they perform best in well-drained, slightly acidic, fertile soil in full sun. Dry bulbs will be ready for harvest when tops have dried and fallen over naturally, usually in August or September. Lift onions gently with a fork and store in cool, dry conditions.

Growing onions is simple:
If you can poke a hole into the ground, you can grow an onion from a little plant.
Plan to put your onion plants in the ground as soon as the soil can be worked, and immediately after your last expected frost date. The cool temperatures, and the fact that the soil is still moist, is actually beneficial to the development of onion bulbs.

Prepare the garden row for your onion plants by digging it to a depth of 4 inches. Each plant will start growing within days after you plant
